People who know and like Anila say that she leads by candor. Apparently, it’s the polite way to say that she doesn’t put up with anyone’s BS.
When she first became CEO at the Centre for Newcomers in Calgary, people would say mean things to her, and people would gossip. It took Anila a while to understand the advice to get a thicker skin.
Her own advice to other women leaders is two-fold. 1. Find women that can be your mentors and friend to share the experience. 2. Find your pit crew, because confidence comes from creating a supportive network that lets you be your true self.
